MLD is a gentle, light touch form of massage based on pumping, circular and spiral shaped movements.

The skin is stretched and torqued in a specific manner with the correct pressure, direction, and speed. This has been proven to encourage lymph flow and can greatly enhance recovery and facilitate drainage.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed in France in 1932 by Emil and Estrid Vodder and has grown to be the most well known manual technique to assist lymph flow and aid in drainage of tissues.

The Lymphatic System is a vital part of the immune system that is made up of a network of organs, vessels and tissues throughout the body. It drains fluid called ‘ ‘lymph’ that has leaked from the blood vessels into the tissue, and filters out pathogens and bacteria before the fluid is returned back into the bloodstream. The goal of the lymphatic system is to protect the body from infection and allow a healthy balance of fluids to move freely throughout the body.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be applied to various areas of the body including; Neck, Face, Chest, Back, Abdomen, Buttocks, Arms, and Legs. MLD can be used to treat the following;

Do I need my Doctors approval for treatment?
If you are receiving treatment for Cancer, you will need Oncologist approval to ensure that Manual Lymph Drainage is safe for you.
For other medical conditions or recent surgeries, it’s best to consult your Physician if you’re unsure whether this treatment is appropriate. You can also reach out to the RMT for guidance on whether approval is necessary.
We want to make sure you are safe, and we’re happy to support you in making the best decision for your care.

I am taking antibiotics, can I still have treatment?
Yes, you can still receive MLD treatment if you’re taking antibiotics, but it’s best to wait until you’re at least 3 days into your antibiotic regimen. This allows your body to begin responding to the medication before the treatment, ensuring the most effective and safe experience.

Is this a full body treatment?
No, MLD isn’t typically a full-body treatment in one session. During your appointments, the treatment will be focused on 1-2 specific areas of the body, depending on your individual treatment goalsand needs.

What oil is used?
No oil or lotion is used during the treatment. The techniques rely on gentle, precise movements directly on the skin to stimulate lymph flow.
If you’re having your face treated, it’s recommended to avoid wearing heavy moisturizers or makeup beforehand.

Is MLD painful?
No, MLD is not painful. It’s a gentle, light-touch treatment where the therapist uses repetitive, subtle movements to stretch the skin in specific directions. These movements help to encourage lymph flow and reduce swelling without causing discomfort.
You may feel a sense of relaxation or light pressure, but it shouldn’t hurt. If anything feels uncomfortable, it’s important to let your RMT know so adjustments can be made.

Is MLD safe during pregnancy?
Yes, MLD is generally safe during pregnancy and can help with issues like swelling and fluid retention. However, if you’re unsure or have had a complicated pregnancy, it’s a good idea to get Physician approval before starting treatment.
If you’re planning a C-section, it’s recommended to have MLD sessions prior to your surgery to help manage potential post-surgical swelling more effectively. This can set the stage for smoother recovery afterward.

Will this help me lose weight?
No, MLD is not designed for weight loss or aesthetic purposes. It’s a therapeutic treatment focused on medical conditions like lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, or fluid retention, using the Dr. Vodder method to support the lymphatic system.
While it may reduce swelling or water retention, it doesn’t target fat loss or body weight. If you’re looking to manage weight please consult with your Physician about your specific needs.

How many appointments will I need for MLD?

The number of appointments needed depends on the condition being treated and your treatment goals. Typically, it’s recommended to book several appointments following your initial session to see noticeable results, such as reduced swelling. A common guideline is to book 4 to 6 appointments, scheduled once weekly. This helps establish an effective treatment plan with achievable goals. If you’re unsure, please consult with your RMT (who is performing MLD) during your first visit.
